Board games such as Boggle, Scattergories, UpWords and Scrabble are a great way for students to both practice their spelling and to extend their vocabulary. It also fosters their enthusiasm, as they feel as if they are playing, rather than simply focusing specifically on learning.
You can buy each of these games from any good toy shop. We found them all at Toys"R"Us

Poetry

(Whole Class, Individual)
Poetry is a great way of introducing new words into a child's vocabulary. There are often words used in poetry that children do not come across too often in their every day lives. Rhyming poetry is also great for children beginning to spell, it is a great way to teach students about rhyming word and to show them that not all rhyming words have the same spelling patterns.
There is a magnitude of poetry available, from simple strait forward poetry to more complex poetry. There are traditional poems and poetry and more modern ones. Getting children to write their own poetry can be a wonderful word work activity, it can really challenge them on rhyming vocabulary and word use.
