Vocabulary
Maquarie Dictionary defines vocabulary as:
1. the stock of words used by a people, or by a particular class or person.
2. a list or collection of the words of a language, book, author, branch of science, or the like, usually in alphabetical order and defined; a wordbook, glossary, dictionary, or lexicon.
3. the words of a language.
In this section we will look more closely at why vocabulary is important. We will also explore some of the theories behind what it takes to develop a diverse vocabulary, and then go on to look at what we can do as teachers to help students extend their vocabulary.
